Okuhle Needs Our Help And Support

Okuhle is doing very well, but she needs continuous guidance and support during this challenging time.  Her young age is an advantage and will make her transition into Rhenish Primary School easier, provided she has the best network of support.

Okuhle's Story Is Not Uncommon

There are many young girls like Okuhle who show great potential from an early age.  They are extremely bright and talented, but need a good education to encourage and develop their young minds.  A quality education will enable these young girls to grow and reach their full potential.  Without a good education, however, they will simply disappear into a sea of uneducated youth.

Okuhle's Progress So Far

Finding Her Feet In A New School

After spending a few months on a waiting list, Okuhle was recently enrolled at Rhenish Primary School in Stellenbosch.  She is making very good progress and adjusting well in her new environment.  In fact, she is loving every moment.   Okhuhle has made many new friends and her self-confidence is growing by the minute.

Okuhle has never had the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular activities, so she is very excited about joining her friends in the sports and culture teams at Rhenish.  She looks forward to joining the netball team and also wants to sing in the school choir this year.

Okuhle's Journey Of Education

Living In Kayamandi

Kayamandi is a relatively large township situated in Stellenbosch, Cape Town.  It is also home to Okuhle, who lives with her mother (Nosipho), father (Sebenzile) and her two sisters (Siyamthanda and Zama).  The Mayijis are a very close-knit family who appreciate the value of a good education and making the most life in spite of your circumstances.  Okuhle's parents have always encouraged their children to study hard.  Nosipho herself is a teacher and has witnessed first hand the many struggles of disadvantaged children in poor community schools.   She wanted a better life for her own children and when the opportunity presented itself for Okuhle to attend one of the top schools in Cape Town, the Mayiji family were only too grateful.

Good News

When Okuhle was recruited as a Rockstar Girl in November 2009, The Rockstar Foundation immediately started the process of applying at schools that would be suitable for her.  Rhenish Primary happened to be quite close to her home and has a reputation for being one of the strongest academic schools in Cape Town.  Okuhle was placed on a waiting list and after a few months received the news that a vacancy had become available.  She enrolled at Rhenish on 12 April 2010 and is loving her new school, teachers and friends.
